Kids & Teens
Welcome to 1000 Things Before Kindergarten with CCPLS! We are excited to start offering this program in partnership with the Library of Virginia, the Soho Center, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The goal of this program is to help children prepare for kindergarten through fun, engaging, everyday activities. There are suggested resources that you can click on below for inspiration, but any activity that promotes growth and development counts towards your child’s 1000 “things!” CCPLS is here to support your family from birth to 1000! We will get milestone rewards to your child when they complete each 100 “things” including a new book, a certificate, and a brag tag! You can easily keep track of how many “things” they have done through the Beanstack website/app or the printable tracking logs below. New to Beanstack? Click here!

Explore the downtowns of Altavista, Brookneal, and Rustburg!
We have partnered with local businesses and organizations to create Book Hunts, a fun way to get to know your community! In building windows throughout Altavista, Brookneal, and Rustburg, you will see a flyer that features a book from the CCPLS collection. Unscramble the letters on each flyer to reveal a secret code; then head to the library for a small prize! Pick up a checklist from a library’s Outdoor Cabinet to get started. Geared toward kids/teens, and everyone is welcome to participate!
Enchanted Trail is an immersive, outdoor story experience for families to enjoy on the Timbrook Park trails!
Every month, a small trail in the woods behind Timbrook Library is transformed with decorations and a story. Families are given a scavenger hunt to enjoy as they walk the trail and read the story together. There is a new theme every month! After the trail, all are welcome to check out books at our Pop-Up Library. This event is geared towards pre-school and elementary students, and the whole family is welcome! Come by during the dates/times listed below to walk the Enchanted Trail.
Be sure to dress appropriately to be outside for about half an hour and sensible shoes are a must. Note: This is a completely outdoor event, and the trail is not stroller friendly.

Public, private, & homeschool teachers - we want to display your students' work!
Showcase On Student Achievement exists to give students a platform to have their STEM/STrEAM projects on public display. Materials will need to be family-friendly, highlight a STEM/STrEAM subject, and dependent on display availability. If your student/class has something that you would like to display at one of our libraries, please contact us.
We bring the book, outdoor games, and fun! You bring a snack (optional) and enjoy the day! We will read the selected book on and off throughout the event, do themed crafts, and play yard games. Swing by anytime. Geared toward ages 0-5.
This will be different from our regular storytimes and will be located at the pavilion between the library and baseball fields.
Enjoy reading in nature with StoryWalks® in your community!
CCPLS has one StoryWalk® around the Timbrook Library and another on Village Walking Trail off Carden Lane in Rustburg. Bring your little ones, and read a picture book as you enjoy the outdoors. Please remember to:
- Travel to all the podiums
- Read the pages as you go
- Stay safe and have fun!
- Get a virtual badge through our Beanstack program
The books will stay out for about a month, so come back often to see if there is something new!
The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
